Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a near room temperature ionized gas, generated under non-equilibrium discharge conditions. Here we show that a short exposure of rat peritoneal exudate macrophages and T-cells to CAP in vitro, triggered an inflammatory phenotype leading to better antigen-presenting and effector cell function respectively. Different from previous studies mainly using immortalized cell lines, both macrophage and T-cells in this study were primary cells isolated from mice. Furthermore, ex-vivo exposure of T-cells to CAP, followed by their adoptive transfer into tumor-bearing mice resulted in a strong antitumor effect in vivo. Mechanistically, CAP seems to disrupt tolerogenic pathways leading to enhanced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines while limiting the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and the expression of inhibitory molecules such as programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). CAP represents therefore a novel, non-toxic and easy to deliver technology to augment the function of immune cells and enhance antitumor responses when used as a component of T-cell adoptive immunotherapies strategies or, potentially in combination with other cancer immunotherapeutic approaches.

A new type of material with embedded intelligence, namely 'intelligent plasma', is introduced. Such new material exhibits programmable chemical pathway networks resembling artificial neural networks. As a Markov process of chemistry, the chemical pathway network can be customized and thus the intelligent plasmas can be programmed to make their own decisions to react to the dynamic external and internal conditions. It finally can accomplish complex missions without any external controls from the humans while relying on its preprogrammed chemical network topology before the mission. To that end, only basic data input and readings are required without any external controls during the mission. The approach to 'if' conditions and 'while' loops of the programmable intelligent plasmas are also discussed with examples of applications including automatic workflows, and signal processing.

Plasma, the fourth and most pervasive state of matter in the visible universe, is a fascinating medium that is connected to the beginning of our universe itself. Man-made plasmas are at the core of many technological advances that include the fabrication of semiconductor devices, which enabled the modern computer and communication revolutions. The introduction of low temperature, atmospheric pressure plasmas to the biomedical field has ushered a new revolution in the healthcare arena that promises to introduce plasma-based therapies to combat some thorny and long-standing medical challenges. This paper presents an overview of where research is at today and discusses innovative concepts and approaches to overcome present challenges and take the field to the next level. It is written by a team of experts who took an in-depth look at the various biomedical applications, made critical analysis, and proposed ideas and concepts that should help the research community focus their efforts on clear and practical steps necessary to keep the field advancing for decades to come.

Spherical quartz stones of around 1 cm in diameter have been exposed to anodic arc discharges in a helium atmosphere at 300 Torr. The arc current flowing between the graphite electrodes was set either in continuous DC mode (30-150 A) or in pulsed mode at 2 Hz (220 A peak). The ablation rate in each sample was systematically measured after several seconds of arc plasma treatment. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) diagnostics and 2-D fluid simulations of the arc discharge have shed light on the heat flux transport and the heating mechanisms of the quartz crystals. A linear correlation is found between the absorbed power density and the resulting rate of penetration, which yields a maximal value of 15 cm/h for approximately 150 W/cm2. The linear fit on the slope provides a specific energy of 40 kJ/cm3. The incident energy flux onto the sample surface promoted a phase transition from crystalline to glassy silica, as characterized via Raman spectroscopy. This study points out the strong potential of arc plasma technology for geothermal drilling applications.

A new design of plasma source that merges the main features of capacitive dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and cold atmospheric plasma jet (CAPJ) is discussed. The DBD system consists of a flexible, porous matrix consisting of silica aerogel, which is comprised between two planar-parallel electrodes. The supply of helium flow submitted to a sinusoidal voltage of 5-9 kV in amplitude and 15 kHz in frequency provides a 2D-distribution of plasma jets that propagate around 1 cm beyond the active DBD region. The plasma multi-jet system is aimed at surface treatment of 3D objects and large areas. CAPJ performance as a hypothetical morphing source in flat and bent configurations is discussed. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) diagnostics has provided the composition of the CAPJ through the aerogel layer. This novel source is promising for situations requiring thorough adaptation of plasma parameters to delicate samples, as for example wound healing and treatment of surgical margins in plasma-based cancer surgery.

This paper provides perspectives on recent progress in the understanding of the physics of devices where the external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the discharge current. This configuration generates a strong electric field, which acts to accelerates ions. The many applications of this set up include generation of thrust for spacecraft propulsion and the separation of species in plasma mass separation devices. These ExB plasmas are subject to plasma-wall interaction effects as well as various micro and macro instabilities, and in many devices, we observe the emergence of anomalous transport. For years, extensive efforts have been made to discover effective, non-invasive anti-cancer therapies. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), is a near room temperature ionized gas composed of reactive species, charged particles, neutral particles, and electrons. CAP also has several physical factors including thermal radiation, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and electromagnetic (EM) waves. Most of the previously reported biological effects of CAP have relied on direct contact between bulk plasma and cells, resulting in the chemical effects generally seen after CAP treatment. In this paper, we demonstrate that the electromagnetic emission produced by CAP can lead to the death of B16F10 melanoma cancer cells via a transbarrier contactless method. When compared with the effect of reactive species, the effect of the physical factors causes much greater growth inhibition. The physical-triggered growth inhibition is due to a new type of cell death, characterized by rapid leakage of bulk water from the cells, resulting in bubbles on the cell membrane, and cytoplasm shrinkage. The results of this study introduce a new possible mechanism of CAP induced cancer cell death and build a foundation for CAP to be used as a non-invasive cancer treatment in the future.

Here, the synthesis of Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2) flakes by means of anodic atmospheric arc discharge is reported for the first time. The vertical electrode configuration consisted of a compound anode (hollow graphite anode filled with MoS2 powder) and a solid graphite cathode placed just above of the compound anode. Arc processes were operated in pulsed mode to preferentially evaporate the powder component from the anode and to minimize Carbon ablation. Pulsed anodic arc discharges were conducted at 2 Hz and 10% duty cycle in 300 Torr of Helium with a peak current of 250-300 A and peak voltage of 35 V. A probe made of Tungsten wire was placed in the vicinity of the arc column to collect the evaporated material. The measured thickness profile was correlated to the particle flux distribution and it was fitted by a simple model of plasma expansion. During pulse phase, electron density was estimated around 5E22 m-3 or higher, and ion current density was of the order of 10 A/mm2. Morphology, structure and composition of the samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The study shows that pulsed arc discharge of the compound anode leads to moderate C deposition combined with MoS2 deposition in the form of fragmented nanocrystals and few atomic monolayers of MoS2. Such synthesis technique is promising to produce new 2D nanomaterials with tailored structure and functionality thanks to the flexibility of pulsed power.
